I have wanted a felt letter board for a while but they usually have boring colors OR the colors I want are EXPENSIVE! So I bought the least expensive letter board I could find and decided to paint it myself. This simple white frame and white felt letter board is $24 online and that same price at Panduro craft store in Sweden. The bonus with the one I linked to is that it also comes with black letters. They are normally sold separately and usually $12 or more. Since the accents in my office are gold and navy blue I decided to add those colors to my letter board. Now since I had to buy the letters separately I chose to buy gold letters. However, they are an added expense so if you buy the white letter board mentioned above that comes with black letters then I would recommend spray painting the letters to the color you want them to be. A can of spray paint is usually cheaper than buying the letters (except maybe in Sweden).

To paint the felt:

You MUST use acrylic paint if you want the paint to stick to the felt. I also used an entire bottle of 100ml acrylic pain on this board because of how porous the felt is. A foam roller is the easiest method of application but any paintbrush should do the trick.

First things first, you need a fine tip paint brush to get into the grooves/cracks of the letter board. PAINT THIS FIRST. I almost used all of my paint rolling it on the entire board and failing to get into all of the grooves until I stopped and finished the grooves before finishing off the entire board with a layer of paint.

Painting the grooves takes patience. I think it took me 45 minutes to finished those friggin cracks! I chose to make the grooves look a little rough around the edges because I like that unfinished look. You can see this in the photo with the white spots on the blue felt.

The result was a perfect board coordinated with my space and for half of the price of a ready made board in navy blue.

If you are going to stick with black letters then you should check out the fun Month or Menu letter kits from Heidi Swapp. They are super cute.
