Do you know what you are sleeping on?

I wrote an earlier blog about how much a love Borax but I feel like I need to show some clear Borax results. Have you ever had a mattress protector or pillow that yellows over time? Looks gross right? Embarrassed when guest come to stay and hope they don't see the pillow inside the pillow case? Not only does it look bad but that dirty thing is what you lay on every night. Borax will fix this. Here is what you need to do:
-Presoak your whites (or yellows that were once white) in SUPER hot water and Borax for 2 hours. I added about 1/3 cup for every gallon of water. I used the hottest water my sink could produce (even tested a second round with hottest shower water and it was also ok). I also tested one soak in 2 hours and one in 3 and they showed similar results. This disgusting photo is what the water looked like after presoaking 1 pillow and 1 mattress protector. AND these are 2 things that I wash frequently. GROSS! This is was you are sleeping on, my friends.

-After presoaking you will wash these on high temp heat in the washing machine. This is actually the only time I every use hot water in the washing machine. Tumble dry or hang dry. Here you can see the difference in my pillows once one has been washed with Borax. Most of the yellow comes out.

I tried soaking a dirty white t-shirt (turned grayish) in Borax as well and didn't get as drastic results. Borax is best used in two ways:
1. To get out yellow, not gray.
2. As a preventative measure to keep your whites whiter longer.
For a long time I stopped buying white shirts because I didn't want to thrown them away after wearing them such a short time. I have since gotten back into wearing white and plan on presoaking them in Borax at least 1 time per month.
I am not saying you should presoak before every wash. What I am saying is that you should consider spending a Saturday morning on your linens. You won't need to do this monthly but just once will drastically improve the color and cleanliness of what you are sleeping on. Your immune system will thank me.
