Marfa, Texas
Tips
-Avoid visiting Mondays and Tuesdays as many spots are closed these days.
-No need to spend more than 3 days here if you are a busy bee like me and see a lot in a day.
-Although Marfa is on the map for artists and hipsters, I'm betting the neighboring city, Alpine is the hidden gem. I personally didn’t get to check anything out there but drove through it on the way out. Many of the bartenders and other employees we spoke to in Marfa said they lived and went to school in Alpine. College town next door to Marfa? Ya thats a secret for sure. Don’t be like me and miss out.
-Marfa is a small town with big city prices. Be prepared to see high prices on cocktails or goods in the local shops.
-Truckland Marfa is a rentable outdoor space. Good to know in case you want to have a shindig or if you want to search that hashtag to crash someone else shindig.
Eat & Drink
-Capri is a swanky bar & resto on the inside but super chill on the outside. They have a good drink menu. No snacks or food until dinner though.
-Stellina is a must for dinner. I think we stuffed our faces with an entree and appetizer each and still thought about ordering more simply because everything was so tasty. Its a mediterranean restaurant that has a changing menu with the seasons. They are closed on Sundays though so plan accordingly.
-Hotel Saint George pool bar and restaurant. So heres the deal, i have no idea if this is open to non guests. Its got frozen drinks, yummy tacos and boozy popsicles. Nuff said.
-Food Shark and Marfa Burrito are pretty popular ones on other blogs but we tried to do a different route than the expected. Just make sure to roam around the town before you settle on a place. Pizza Foundation and Al Campo caught our eye as we were leaving Marfa and I know there are others hidden in this town.
Do
-2d gallery is one to catch. The owner, Dennis, has a good eye for modern works of art. He’s got loads of passion and knowledge about the art too and since it’s a small town with not a lot of foot traffic he is happy to take time with you if you want.
-Wrong Marfa is a gallery/store. You will find unique and crazy things but the price tag is steep. It’s worth browsing if you can’t afford the goods.
-The Chianti Foundation is a museum with both free and paid areas. It includes a free walking tour of cement sculptures. Bring water if you are going to walk this during a hot Texas day.
-Prada Marfa is probably the most famous stop in Marfa even though its not in the city. It’s a 35 minute drive outside of the city on US90. Its a great art installation in the middle of NOWHERE.
